Shaktipeeth: Shardiya Maa Durga Navratri has started from October 15, 2023. In Shrimaddevi Bhagwat Mahapuran, Maa Adishakti Durga has been worshiped as ‘Purusharth Sadhika Devi’. Goddess Durga is actually a symbol of the infinite power of women.

In the 13 chapters of ‘Durga Saptashati’, the story of destruction of demonic powers by this superpower is described.

According to Devi Bhagwat Purana and other mythological accounts, Goddess Sati, hurt by her husband’s insult during Daksha Yajna, left her body in the fire of Yoga.

Enraged at this, Lord Shiva carried his lifeless body on his shoulders and wandered here and there across the earth and mourned bitterly.

During this period, various parts of Maa Sati’s body, clothes or jewelery were scattered here and there on the earth throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Over time, those places became revered as Shaktipeeth. Which we worship Adishakti Maa Durga in the form of Shaktipeeth. Her Pindi form is worshiped in every Shaktipeeth.

The Shaktipeeth of Maa Adishakti Durga are spread throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Who is worshiped in Maa Adishakti Durga Shaktipeeth?

It is noteworthy that in these Shaktipeeth, the mother is not worshiped as an idol but in the form of Pindi.

Also, in all these Shaktipeeth, Mahadev Shiva is present in various Bhairava forms. Some of these Peethas are the main centers of Tantra Sadhana.

On the occasion of Shardiya Maa Durga Navratri, the special sadhana period of worship of Maa Shakti, we will learn about 51 Shaktipeeth.

Know about Shaktipeeth of Maa Adishakti

1. Kirit Shaktipeeth, Lalbagh Kot West Bengal

The Kirit (crown) of Mata Sati had fallen in the Kirit Shaktipeeth located at Lalbagh Kot on the banks of the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is worshiped as “Bhuvaneshwari” and Shiva is worshiped as “Samvarta Bhairav”.

2. Katyayani Shaktipeeth, Vrindavan

Katyayani Shaktipeeth is located in Vrindavan (Mathura) in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is said that the hair of Maa Sati had fallen in Katyayani Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is worshiped as “Katyayani” and Shiva is worshiped as “Bhairava Bhootesh”.

3. Maa Mahishmardini Shaktipeeth, Maharashtra

Mahishamardini Shaktipeeth is located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India. It is said that the maa’s eyes had fallen here.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is present in the form of “Mahishmardini” and Shiva is present in the form of “Bhairav Krodhish”.

4. Shri Parvat Shaktipeeth Ladakh

SriParvat Shaktipeeth is located on Shri Parvat in Ladakh, India. Here the “southern temple” of Mata Sati had fallen.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is revered as “Shri Sundari” and Shiva as “Bhairav Sundaranand”.

5. Vishalakshi Shaktipeeth Varanasi

Vishalakshi Shaktipeeth is located at Meerghat in the city of Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Here the gem from the right ear of Mother Sati had fallen.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is worshiped as “Vishalakshi” and Shiva is worshiped as “Kaal Bhairav”.

6. Visveshwari Shaktipeeth Kabbur

Vishveshwari Shaktipeeth is located on the banks of the Godavari in the Kabbur region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Mother’s left cheek had fallen on this Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Maa Adishakti here is “Vishveshwari” and Shiva is “Bhairav Dandapani”.

7. Shuchindram Shaktipeeth, Kanyakumari

Shuchindram Shaktipeeth is located 13 km away from Kanyakumari, the confluence of three oceans in Tamil Nadu, India. The Urdhava Dant (upper teeth) of Maa Sati had fallen in Shuchindram Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti or Sati is “Narayani” and Shiva is “Bhairav Sanhar”.

8. Panch Sagar Shaktipeeth Varanasi

Panchasagar Shaktipeeth is located near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. According to Devi Bhagwat Purana, the lower teeth of the maa had fallen here.

Form:- Here the power of Maa Adishakti Goddess is “Varahi” and Shiva is “Bhairav Maharudra”.

9. Jwaladevi Shaktipeeth Kangra

Jwaladevi Shaktipeeth is located in Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh. The “tongue” of Goddess Sati had fallen in this Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is worshiped in the form of “Sidhida” and Shiva is worshiped in the form of “Bhairav Unmatt”. The flame keeps burning in this temple all the time.

10. Harsiddhi Shaktipeeth Ujjain

Harsiddhi Shaktipeeth is situated on the banks of Shipra river in Ujjain, the city of Mahakal. Sati’s right elbow had fallen on this Shaktipeeth situated on Bhairav mountain.

Form:- Maa Adishakti here is revered as “Harsiddhi” and Shiva as “Sukhdanand”.

11.Atthaas Shaktipeeth Labpur

Attahas Shaktipeeth is located at Katwa-Ahmedpur in the Labpur (Lampur) district of West Bengal, India, about 95 kilometers from the Vardhaman railway station. The lower lip of Mata Sati had fallen on this temple.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is worshiped as “Kali” and Shiva as “Kaal Bhairav”.

12. Jansthan Shaktipeeth Nashik

Janasthan Shaktipeeth is located in Panchvati in Nashik, Maharashtra, India. Maa’s chin had fallen here.

Form:- Here Goddess Maa Adishakti is worshiped as “Bhramari” and Shiva as “Bhairav Viritaksha”.

13. Mahamaya Shaktipeeth Kashmir

Mahamaya Shaktipeeth is located inside the cave of Baba Amarnath in Kashmir. It is also known as Him Shaktipeeth. Here the “throat” of Mata Sati had fallen.

Form:- Maa Adishakti here is called “Mahamaya” and Shiva is called “Bhairav Trisandhyeshwar”.

14. Nandipur Shaktipeeth Birbhoomi

Nandipur Shaktipeeth is located near Shantiniketan in Birbhum district of West Bengal, India. The “Kanthaar” of Goddess Mata had fallen in Nandipur Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is “Bhavani” and Shiva is “Rudra Bhairav”.

15. Shri Shailam Shaktipeeth Kurnool

250 km from Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is situated at a place called Sri Shailam, near Kurnool. In this Shri Shailam Shaktipeeth, the “Greeva” of Maa Adishakti had fallen.

Form:- Here Maa Shakti is worshiped in the form of “Mahalakshmi” and Shiva in the form of “Bhairav” Sarvanand.

16. Nalhati Shaktipeeth Bolpur

Nalhari Shaktipeeth is located in a place called Bolpur in West Bengal, India. Maa’s larynx had fallen here.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is “Kalika” and the form of Shiva is “Bhairav Yogish”.

17. Mithila Shaktipeeth Janakpur

Mithila Shaktipeeth is located in Mithila near Janakpur railway station on the India-Nepal border. Here maa’s left shoulder had fallen.

Form:– Here Maa Adishakti is called “Mahadevi” and Shiva is called “Bhairav Mahodar”.

However, there are many differences of opinions regarding the place of this Shaktipeeth.

  • One section calls the “Van Durga” temple at a place called “Uchchaith”, 51 km east of Janakpur (Nepal), as “Mithila Shaktipeeth”.
  • The second category refers to the “Ugratara” temple near Saharsa station in Bihar.
  • The third group recognizes the “Jayamangala” Devi temple near Samastipur as Mithila Shaktipeeth.

18. Ratnavali Shaktipeeth Chennai

Ratnavali Shaktipeeth is located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The “right shoulder” of Mata Sati had fallen at this place.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is “Kumari” and Shiva is “Bhairav”.

19. Ambaji Shaktipeeth Gunagadh

Ambaji Shaktipeeth is situated on the peak of Girnar mountain in Gunagadh in Gujarat. Here the “belly” of Mata Sati had fallen.

The temple of Maa Amba is Shaktipeeth. It is believed that the upper lip of Mata Sati had fallen on the land of this Shaktipeeth in Mount Girinaar.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is “Avanti” and Shiva is “Lambakarna Bhairav”.

20. Jalandhar Shaktipeeth

This Shaktipeeth is located in Jalandhar city of Punjab, India. This Peeth is also famous by the name of Tripuramalini Shaktipeeth. Here the “left breast” of Mata Sati had fallen.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is known as “Tripurmalini” and Shiva is known as “Bhishan Bhairav”.

21. Ramgiri Shaktipeeth Maihar

Ramgiri Shaktipeeth is in “Sharda Temple” of Maihar in Madhya Pradesh, India. Here the “right breast” of the Maa Goddess was destroyed.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is worshiped in the form of “Chandrabhaga” and Shiva is worshiped in the form of “Vakratunda Bhairav”.

22. Hard Shaktipeeth Giridih

Hard Shaktipeeth is situated in Giridih district of Jharkhand, India. The famous Jyotirlinga of Vaidyanath is also here.

This place is situated in a crematorium. It is also called Jaya durga Shaktipeeth. Here the “heart” of Mata Sati had fallen.

Form:- Here the Power of Maa Adishakti is “Jayadurga” and Shiva is “Bhairav Vaidyanath”.

23. Vrikteswar Shaktipeeth Sainthaya

Mata’s Vrikteshwar Shaktipeeth is located in Sainthia, West Bengal, India. Maa’s liver had fallen here. The main temple here is Vrikteswar Shiva Temple.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is “Mahishasurmardini” and Shiva is “Bhairav Vaktnath”.

24. Narayani Shaktipeeth Tamil Nadu

Narayani Shaktipeeth is located in Tamil Nadu India. The back part i.e. “Peeth” of Mata Sati had fallen on this Shaktipeeth.

25. Bahula Shaktipeeth Ketugram

The Bahula Shaktipeeth of Mata Shakti is located in Ketugram near Navadweep Dham, 145 km from Howrah in West Bengal. The “left arm” of Maa Shakti had fallen at this place.

Form:– Here Maa Adishakti is “Bahula” and Shiva is “Bhairav Bhiruk”.

26. Bhairav Parvat Shaktipeeth Ujjain

Bhairav Parvat Shaktipeeth is situated on the banks of Shipra river near Ujjain city. The right elbow of Mother Sati had fallen on this Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Here the power of Maa Adishakti is “Avantika” and Bhairav is “Kaal Bhairav”.

27. Manivedika Shaktipeeth Pushkar Teerth Sarovar Rajasthan

Manivedika Shaktipeeth is located in the Gayatri Temple near the Savitri Temple located on the top of the mountain near the famous Pushkar Tirtha Sarovar, 11 km from Ajmer in Rajasthan, India. Here the “Manibandh” of Maa Sati was ended.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is “Gayatri” and Shiva is “Ugra Bhairav”.

28. Prayag Shaktipeeth

Prayag Shaktipeeth is located in Prayag Raj, Uttar Pradesh, India. The “fingers” of the right hand of Mata Sati had fallen in this Shaktipeeth of Tirtharaj Prayag.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is worshiped as “Lalita” and Shiva as “Bhav Bhairav”.

Some people consider Lalita Devi Temple of Prayag and some others consider Alopi Mata Temple as Shaktipeeth.

29. Virja Shaktipeeth Jagannath Puri

Virja Shaktipeeth is located in Utkal (Orissa), India. The “navel” of Mata Sati had fallen in this Shaktipeeth.

This Shaktipeeth is situated in the temple of Vimala Devi in the premises of the temple of Jagannath Ji.

Form:- Here the power of Maa Adishakti is known as “Vimala” and Shiva is known as “Jagat Bhairav”.

30. Kanchi Shaktipeeth Kanchipuram

Kanchi Shaktipeeth is located in the famous city of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, India. The skeleton of Mata Sati had fallen in this Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Here Goddess Maa Adishakti is “Devgarbha” and Shiva is “Rudrabhairav”.

31. Kalamadhav Shaktipeeth Amarkantak

Kalmadhav Shaktipeeth is situated in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh. Maa’s left buttocks had fallen near the Shon River.

Form:- According to the mythological description, here Maa Adishakti is “Kali” and Shiva is “Asitang Bhairav”.

32. Shona Shaktipeeth Amarkantak

Shona Shaktipeeth is located on the banks of the Narmada River near Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, India. The “southern buttocks” of Mata Sati had fallen on this Shaktipeeth.

33. Kamakhya Shaktipeeth Guwahati

Kamakhya Shaktipeeth is situated on Nilanchal mountain in the western part of Guwahati city in Kamrup district of Assam state.

This Shaktipeeth is the main center of Tantra Sadhana. Maa Sati’s vagina had fallen on Kamakhya Shaktipeeth.

37. Tripura Sundari Shaktipeeth Tripura

Tripura Sundari Shaktipeeth is situated at the south-east angle on the mountain in Radha Kishorepur area in Tripura, India. In this Shaktipeeth, the “Dakshin Pad” of Mata Sati was destroyed.

Form:– Here Maa Adishakti is known as “Tripurasundari” and Shiva is known as “Tripuresh Bhairav”.

38. Vibhas Shaktipeeth Midnapore

Gandaki Shaktipeeth is situated at the origin of Gandaki River in Nepal. “Dakshin Gand” of Sati was destroyed in Gandaki Shaktipeeth.

Form:- Here Maa Adishakti is present in the form of “Gandaki” and Shiva is present in the form of “Bhairav Chakrapani”.

46. Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth Kathmandu

Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth is located in Pashupatinath, Nepal. Both the knees of Mother Sati had fallen in this Shaktipeeth.

This Shaktipeeth Guhyeshwari Devi is considered to be the presiding deity of Nepal. Water keeps falling continuously from a hole in the Guhyeshwari temple. This Shaktipeeth is also a special center of Tantra Sadhana.

47. Hinglaj Shaktipeeth Pakistan

Hinglaj Shaktipeeth is located in the Hinglaj area, 144 km north-west of Karachi in the Balochistan province of Pakistan.

The skull of Mata Sati i.e. “Brahmarandhra” had fallen in this Shaktipeeth situated on the banks of Hingos river.

Chattal Shaktipeeth is also in Bangladesh. It is situated on Chandrashekhar mountain near Sitakund station, 38 km from Chittagong.
